DIY Trigger Transformer?

Postby Snipeye » Thu Nov 14, 2013 12:49 am

I'm looking at this: http://www.glacialwanderer.com/hobbyrobotics/?p=490

And I want to build this - I've done some high speed photography before but only with moderately-powered external flashes - nothing crazy. This is crazy. I have a fair bit of background in electronics, but little experience or knowledge with regards to HV. I was wondering if buying that 45Kv trigger transformer is the only way of going about it - to save, budget-wise, I'd love to build my own. How possible is this?

I've read you can you the the high voltage transformer in a car (I think it's called ignition coil). You could also wrap your own transformer. I haven't done either of these so you'll need to search the web if you want more info on these techniques.

Good to know - is there any sort of minimum voltage that'll be necessary to really activate the main spark gap? I know it's ionizing the air between, I just don't know how MUCH it needs to ionize...
